with successive pregnancies. In part, however, the reduction is artifactual, because some losses occur before 28 weeks and are therefore registered as abortions and not as perinatal deaths. The reduction in the overall incidence of rhesus disease has meant that experience among obstetricians, paediatricians, general practitioners, and midwives is generally low necessitating the development of expertise concentrated in large regional centres from which management advice can be readily available. It should be remembered, however, that prevention is the most effective method of 'managing' rhesus disease, so it is vital to ensure that anti-D is administered at the correct time and in the correct dose after any potentially sensitising

Rhesus haemolytic disease of the newborn: Postnatal management, associated morbidity and long-term outcome.

Rhesus haemolytic disease of the newborn can lead to complications such as hyperbilirubinaemia, kernicterus and anaemia. Postnatal management consists mainly of intensive phototherapy, exchange transfusion and blood transfusion. During the last decades, significant progress in prenatal care strategies for patients with Rhesus haemolytic disease has occurred. New prenatal management options have...

Ultrasound-guided fetal intravenous transfusion for severe rhesus haemolytic disease.

Intrauterine, intraperitoneal transfusion is associated with a poor survival rate in fetuses with hydrops and low gestational age. A method of direct fetal intravenous transfusion was used in two fetuses. One fetus with severe rhesus haemolytic disease was given transfusions in the 29th and 30th weeks of gestation, using an ultrasound-guided needle through the hepatic part of the umbilical vein...

A-B-O incompatibility and haemolytic disease of the newborn.

Since the work of Boorman, Dodd and Trinick (1949), incompatibility in the ABO system has been recognized with increasing frequency as a cause of haemolytic disease. Robinson, Phillips and Prystowsky (1951), Shumway, Miller and Young (1955), Davidsohn (1956) and others have written on this condition. And yet haemolytic disease due to ABO incompatibility is much less widely known than that due t...

Developmental outcome after intravascular intrauterine transfusion for rhesus haemolytic disease.

The development outcome of 16 infants who had rhesus disease was assessed at 18 months. Eight had received intravascular intrauterine transfusion and eight postnatal exchange transfusions. There was no difference in developmental outcome and neither group was different from the population as a whole.

The fetal and neonatal outcomes of Rhesus D antibody affected pregnancies in Northern Ireland.

It has been suggested that routine antenatal prophylactic anti-D should be introduced for prevention of Rhesus D (RhD) haemolytic disease. Before making changes to the current prevention program it is important, therefore, to have up-to-date data on affected infants. Pregnant women with anti-D antibodies between September 1994 and February 1997 were identified by the Northern Ireland Blood Tran...

Severe hydrops in the infant of a Rhesus D-positive mother due to anti-c antibodies diagnosed antenatally: a case report

INTRODUCTION Rhesus haemolytic disease of the newborn is a prototype of maternal isoimmunisation and fetal haemolytic disease. There are other rare blood group antigens capable of causing alloimmunisation and haemolytic disease such as c, C, E, Kell and Duffy. In India, after the confirmation of a newborn's blood group, antibodies are screened only if the mother is Rehsus D-negative negative an...
